What’s in an esthetician’s travel bag - Botnia Travel Essentials and Pre- and Post-Travel Skincare Routines
If you’re traveling this summer, we’ve made it easier than ever to take Botnia with you! Especially if you’re traveling abroad, it may not be easy to find your favorite products since we’re not available internationally (yet!). We’ve put together pre-travel and post-travel routines and our best recommendations for climates you might encounter on vacation.
Pre-travel skincare routine
When you’re preparing to travel, it’s best not to change up your skincare routine right before a trip. The main focus is on keeping your skin protected and hydrated. Avoid over-exfoliating, especially if you’ll be outdoors more! Here are Botnia Master Esthetician Julianna’s pre-travel recommendations:
Cleanse: Renewing Face Wash for its antioxidants and soothing botanicals: it’s like bathing your skin in a nourishing tea.
Tone: Rose Water Toner to maintain your skin’s pH, rose balances bacteria making it great for breakouts.
Moisturize: Daily Face Cream - if hopping on a plane, add this as an occlusive layer to help protect from water loss, then Wisdom Oil. If taking a road trip, swap Daily Face Cream for Hydrating Serum as a deconstructed moisturizer with a more lightweight feel. Keeps your skin hydrated and is safe for breakouts, then follow up with Wisdom Oil for antioxidant support from the sun. Don’t forget SPF!
Traveling by plane
Airports can wreak havoc on our skin, especially if stress is high. The air circulating through the airplane can feel dry, so using our Soothing Repair Mask can help keep your skin feeling hydrated throughout the flight! Leave it on until it becomes tacky and remove it just before you get off the plane. It comes in a 3.4 oz bottle which still can get through TSA, but if you prefer to bring a smaller size with you, decant the mask into another container making sure it’s airtight so it doesn’t dry out on your trip. Pro tip: spraying Rose Geranium Hydrosol underneath the mask before applying can help your skin soak up that extra goodness into your skin and you’ll arrive at your destination rejuvenated and nourished!
It can also be helpful to bring our reusable 100% hemp facial pads with you so you don’t have to use that scratchy paper towel from the airplane lavatory.
Our beautiful new Eye Pillow is also a great travel companion when you need that extra boost to unwind and relax first-class style!
Julianna also recommends cleansing your skin after you get off the plane to help prevent breakouts. See a quick Botnia nighttime routine at the airport from Jeannette Aranda of @shutthekaleup here.
You’ve arrived at your destination
Some of our esthetician’s favorite products are simple and give your skin that summer glow! Amanda of Coastal Glow Skincare in Sacramento, CA recommends the following products during vacation:
AM: Using the Hydrating Serum and Wisdom Oil together looks great on its own or perfect under makeup, which keeps your skin hydrated and glowy! The Wisdom Oil is packed with antioxidants to fight free radicals and help to prevent sun damage to the skin.
PM: Use Balancing Oil Cleanser to help remove SPF, makeup, and grime from the day. After cleansing, spraying Rose Water Toner either directly onto the skin or into your hands and patting into the skin will help keep inflammation at bay. Our Eye Cream is a great eye treatment to keep those peepers hydrated and plump throughout your trip even on those late night adventures. It doubles as an all over face cream to keep your skin hydrated. Lastly, if you’ve gotten a lot of sun exposure during the day, apply Soothing Repair Mask as a 15 minute mask or even an overnight treatment to bring moisture back to your skin and help to relieve any burns. You can also use it on your body if you get a sunburn in other places. Here’s our guide to treating sunburns with Botnia if you get a little toasty away from home.
Throughout the day:
Applying our Body Cream can help keep your skin moisturized especially if you’re in a chlorinated pool or swimming in the ocean! You can even freshen up by spraying the Rose Geranium Hydrosol for a quick pick-me-up.
Post-travel skincare routine
Being off a consistent home care regimen can cause skin to feel out of balance, congested or more inflamed (from changes in diet, sleep, climate, etc.). If your skin feels like it could use a gentle refresh, save this for your post travel regimen:
Cleanse: Balancing Oil Cleanser mixed with Renewing Face Wash for a thorough cleanse with added antioxidant support from the foaming face wash.
Tone: Rose Geranium Hydrosol to add water-based hydration, soothe, and cool.
Mask: Mix Kale Mask with Essential Enzymes to help nourish the skin with vitamins and nutrients after time in the sun, wearing makeup, environmental pollutants, and to promote cellular turnover. Add Sulfur Mask to the mix if you’re experiencing more congestion and breakouts than usual. Remove the mask after 15 minutes, and mist hydrosol generously.
Moisturize: Apply Hydrating Serum and follow with Replenishing Facial Oil. Massage facial oil to help promote better lymphatic flow, focusing on the neck area.
