Treating Aging Skin with Botnia Skincare
For all our wise beauties, we love your skin - fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and all - because your skin tells the story of your life that’s uniquely you.
We despise the term anti-aging. At Botnia, we use the term “wise skin,” and we think it’s a better way to describe aging skin - as we grow older, we grow wiser, and that’s a beautiful thing. As we age, it’s so important that we care and nurture our body systems as they slow down through their cellular process by adding in enzymes and antioxidants, which offer a nutritional support system for your skin. When we get down to the nuts and bolts of why we see the signs of aging, it comes down to a cellular expression of our physiological lives. When we can meet that with the right nutrition, we can see vibrant healthy, hydrated, plump, dewy skin. But our goal isn’t to reverse a wrinkle because you’ve spent your life laughing, or to change a sunspot because you went to the beach every summer. Our goal is to bring strength to your body’s largest organ and nourish the skin through nutritional skincare.
Caring for wise skin
In the treatment room, most wise skin guests are usually concerned with age spots and fine lines and wrinkles. While we can’t reverse the signs of aging, we can further prevent additional damage to the skin and help protect it. To learn why our skin changes color with the sun, you can learn about how oxidation and sun exposure works on the skin and why free radicals are harmful here.
The three most important tips for caring for wise skin are making sure you’re keeping your skin hydrated, adding in enzymes and antioxidants, and incorporating massage into your routine to stimulate circulation of the skin. Here’s how we treat wise skin using Botnia!
Treating age spots
Age spots are a sign of life in the sun, and the best way to combat them is to add a boost of antioxidants - our Wisdom Oil is a must! Botnia’s Master Esthetician Amanda of Coastal Glow Skincare (Sacramento, CA) loves this routine to help minimize age spots:
-Cleanse with the Renewing Face Wash, which has green tea extracts that help to reduce inflammation, aiding in cell repair, smoothing skin, while providing a rich dose of antioxidants.
-Protect your barrier with Restorative Face Cream to keep your skin plump and hydrated through the day.
-There are two ways you can use our Wisdom Oil in your routine: adding it underneath your moisturizer to target spots and help to regenerate new skin cells, or mixed into or used over your moisturizer to help fight free radicals and ward off environmental damage. Try it different ways and see what works best for your skin.
-Using the Flower Powder Mask weekly will help to brighten sunspots and help aid your skin in healing. The rose hips in the mask help to exfoliate and brighten skin. See all the benefits of using rose hips in your routine here. Mixing this mask with our Essential Enzymes is a great way to add in a weekly gentle exfoliating treatment that’ll help to slough off dead skin cells and encourage regeneration of new cells.
-Using protective coverings and clothing like hats and sunglasses. The more physical barriers you add, the more protected you are. Daily SPF is also the best form of protection against those harmful UV rays. We prefer a physical sunscreen over chemical sunscreens, but any sunscreen is better than none at all.
Addressing fine lines and wrinkles
Wrinkles are just expressions of our skin created as we age - we should embrace them! What we call “crow’s feet” (wrinkles formed around the sides of your eyes from smiling), other countries call “joy lines.” The more joy lines you have, the more you’ve enjoyed a life of laughing.
If you’re looking to minimize fine lines and wrinkles you’ll want to focus on stimulation and circulation.
-Using our Balancing Oil Cleanser to cleanse the skin will help to encourage a few moments to massage your skin everyday, which helps to soften fine lines. Give yourself at least a full minute which will help to boost circulation in the skin.
-Incorporate our Rose Geranium Hydrosol to keep your tissues hydrated since dehydrated skin can increase the appearance of wrinkles.
-Pair the hydrosol with our Hydrating Serum, which has hyaluronic acid that will lock in the hydrosol and bring your skin deep hydration.
-Lastly, layer with the Restorative Face Cream underneath the Replenishing Facial Oil. A tip from Master Esthetician Julianna of Blu Moon Beauty is to spend time massaging the oil into the skin to aid in smoothing lines and wrinkles in the deeper layers of the skin.
-If you have sensitive skin or are sensitive to fragrances and essential oils, we also recommend using our Eye Cream as an all-over face cream and spending extra time gently massaging the cream around the skin of your eyes.
Additional tips for wise skin care
If you find some extra time in your day, these additional rituals are lovely additions to your routine.
Before hopping into the shower, take a few minutes to use our Luminous Body Scrub to massage your body in circular motions to help slough off dead skin cells. Many of our holistic estheticians also recommend dry brushing, which helps to stimulate circulation in the skin. (We like these dry brushes.)
Use our Gentle Hand Lotion and keep it by the bedside as a nightly ritual to moisturize and soften your hands while you sleep. You can use hand mitts (like these) to give your mitts some extra TLC.
Wise skin types can also benefit from slugging at night. Pairing our Soothing Repair Mask with Rose Geranium Hydrosol is a great way to add in a boost of hydration overnight. Here are our tips and tricks for slugging.
Don’t forget to drink water throughout the day! Remember, our bodies are made up of 70% water so we must replenish ourselves to keep from getting dehydrated.
Our philosophy on skincare is treating the skin with gentle yet powerful plants. You won’t see us recommending harsh active ingredients like vitamin C or retinols, because we believe in working in synergy with the skin. As we age, it takes more time for our skin to heal - simply another reason to treat our skin with gentleness and self-love. Here’s to growing wiser day by day!
