Is it made with non-nano zinc and is it reef safe?

Yes! It’s reef safe and made with non-nano zinc oxide. Non nano zinc means the zinc oxide particles used in the SPF are larger in size and sit more on the surface of the skin to physically reflect and scatter UV rays, rather than being made into ultra-tiny nanoparticles.

What’s behind the name, Gentle Sun Cream?

It’s a soft active barrier support that’s gentle and skin safe, hence the name. It’s kid-safe, pregnancy-safe, acne safe, and safe to use for those that have cancer.

What is the shelf life?

24 months. It’s required by the FDA to have a product that is stable for two years. Different from the other products in the line, SPF is filled into an aluminum tube which reduces the amount of oxygen that’s inside the bottle which prevents oxidation and keeps the SPF safe for a longer period of time.

Who it’s for / How it feels and smells

Does it have a white cast? Will it rub into darker skin tones?

We’ve tested the SPF on all Fitzpactricks, including 4+, and the color of our SPF blends in beautifully with all skin tones in about 15 seconds with an edamame size amount. The formulation includes Astaxanthin, a powerful antioxidant, and is the soft active plant pigment that heals and protects your skin. It’s why our SPF has a pink tone.

What does it feel like on the skin?

Lightweight, soft, hydrating, and breathable.

Is Gentle Sun Cream acne-safe and sensitive skin-friendly?

Yes. The formula was designed specifically for sensitive, reactive, and barrier-compromised skin. It’s also acne-safe and non-comedogenic.

Is it safe during pregnancy and for kids?

It’s safe for both and doesn’t sting the eyes. Win-win! It’s also great for protecting melasma prone skin.

What does it smell like?

Made with fresh calendula, rose, and rose geranium hydrosols, its aroma is a faint garden scent of rose geranium - light, herbal and uplifting.

How use use / recommend

How much SPF should be applied, and how often for reapplying?

Apply an edamame-sized amount to the face and neck. Reapply every 80 minutes when outdoors, especially with direct sun exposure, sweating, or swimming. Finally - an SPF you’ll want to reapply!

How should I recommend guests use SPF in their regimen?

Apply daily, 15 minutes before sun exposure, as the last step in their home care. Can be used over or in place of face cream for normal to oily skin. For dry/dehydrated skin types, it can be layered over any of our face creams, serums or oils (let the oil absorb for a few minutes before applying SPF). 

What if you don’t wear SPF because you dislike the feel of sunscreen or already wear makeup?

This is exactly why we developed Gentle Sun Cream the way we did. It was formulated to feel like skincare, not traditional sunscreen. It layers beautifully under makeup, doesn’t feel heavy or dry, and is safe for acne-prone and sensitive skin.

Is it okay to leave Gentle Sun Cream on overnight?

Yes. Gentle Sun Cream was developed like skincare and is filled with nourishing ingredients that support the skin barrier. Those with sensitive or dry skin may enjoy the extra conditioning overnight.

Any tips for opening the tube?

Use the point on the black cap to very gently puncture the aluminum seal. Slow and steady!

Will Botnia release a body sunscreen?

Yes, we hope to in the future. SPF development takes an incredible amount of time, testing, and regulatory work, but it’s something we’d love to expand into eventually. Hopefully in far less than six years this time. ;)
